About the Speaker:

Dr. Ashwini K.P. is the sixth United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance. She has been serving in this role since November 2022, following her appointment by the Human Rights Council.

Prior to this role, Dr. Ashwini served as an Assistant Professor of Political Science in India. Her academic and advocacy work has primarily focused on social exclusion, intersectionality, and race and descent-based discrimination within the international human rights framework. She has extensively engaged with policy issues affecting marginalized communities, particularly Dalit and Indigenous peoples in India.

As part of her long-standing commitment to social justice, Dr. Ashwini has represented Indian Dalit women across various civil society platforms, supporting them in developing strategies to ensure greater representation of marginalized women in decision-making spaces within activism and broader social movements. She has also previously worked with Amnesty International India and is the co-founder of Zariya, a non-profit organization dedicated to marginalized women and knowledge production.

Dr. Ashwini K.P. is also a visiting fellow at Stanford University.
