The Dignity Initiative, under its Discourse for Dignity series, hosted its another session on April 25, 2025, at Martin Chautari, Kathmandu, focusing on “Ambedkar’s Perspective on Constitutional Morality and the Caste System.” The session featured eminent political analyst Hari Sharma, who delivered an insightful talk exploring the continued relevance of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideas. Sharma emphasized Ambedkar’s commitment to constitutional morality as a guiding principle for dismantling caste-based discrimination and ensuring social justice. Drawing from Ambedkar’s life and work, Sharma highlighted how Ambedkar envisioned a governance model rooted in equality, fraternity, and justice, warning against the dangers of majoritarianism and political hero worship.
Hari Sharma, a Fulbright scholar and a leading figure in political analysis and governance studies, brought a wealth of knowledge to the session. With an academic background from Tribhuvan University and Cornell University, and experience advising Nepal’s top political leaders, Sharma’s perspective provided depth and historical context to the discussion. He is also the co-author of significant works such as Political Leadership in Nepal and Local Leadership in Nepal, and a frequent contributor to national media.
The session underscored several key themes, including Ambedkar’s role as an aspirational figure for governance and social reform, his pivotal contributions through landmark events like the Poona Pact and the drafting of the Constitution, and his critical view on democracy that stresses the need for constitutional methods, the rejection of political hero worship, and the promotion of fraternity. Sharma stressed that Ambedkar’s insights remain profoundly relevant today, particularly in strengthening democratic institutions and safeguarding minority rights.
Concluding the discussion, Sharma reflected on the pressing need to incorporate Ambedkar’s constitutional values into contemporary governance frameworks. He pointed out the challenges faced by political parties and leaders in upholding democratic ideals and truly representing marginalized communities. The session affirmed that constitutional morality remains a cornerstone for building an inclusive, equitable society. As the Discourse for Dignity series continues, it aims to nurture such critical dialogues to shape the future of Nepal’s Dalit movement and the broader pursuit of social justice.
The session was moderated by Rup Sunar, Chairperson of the Dignity Initiative.
