Central Department of Anthropology, Tribhuvan University; ANHS Kathmandu Research Center and Dignity Initiative jointly organized 2 days long Ethnographic Research Workshop on 22-23 June 2019. The workshop held at the Central Department of Anthropology in Kirtipur.
This workshop was organized to empower upcoming scholars from the marginalized communities with ethnographic research and methodological skills. The key methodological issues including designing a research question; cause and effect; variable and operationalization; observation, journaling, interviewing and ethical consideration were discussed in the workshop. Altogether, 32 participants from different level and academic discipline took part in the workshop. Among them, three participants were students from the USA.
Prof. Steve Folmar led the workshop as the lead facilitator and discussed the methodologies and ethical considerations. Dr. Dambar Chemjong, head of the Central Department of Anthropology at Tribhuvan University highlighted the historical context of ethnographic research in Nepal. Likewise, Mr. Manohari Upadhyaya, Director of the ANHS Kathmandu Research Center shared his experiences of conducting qualitative research.
Dignity Initiative’s chair J. B. Bishwakarma told that such efforts are instrumental for knowledge production. He further opined, “We will continue to organize such activities collaboratively to challenge dominant narratives on Dalit and their history.”
