Dalit Movement Timeline

Dalit movement started in Nepal since 1950 A.D. It is as old as the democratic movement of the
country. The below is an attempt to present the chronology of Dalit rights movement that has
evolved so far.

Initial stage (prior to 1950 A.D)
1940 A.D- Revolt of Sarbajeet Bishwakarma
1947 A.D- Formation of Tailor Union

Sensitization (1950-1960)

Process of organizational development began
Dalit issue included in the land movement led by Bhim Duta Pant
Dr. BR Ambedkar’s visit to Nepal and its mammoth impact
Dalit was allowed to enter to the Pashupatinath Temple
Construction of the Bijeshwori Hostel

Structural Evolution (1960-1990)

Muluki Ain issued in 1963 by abolishing untouchability
Dalit Human Development Council was formed in 1967
First Dalit conference was held demanding for reservation in 1972

Referendum in Nepal, 1979

Excluded Caste Uplfitment Forum was formed in 1988
